Rhino 8 crashes

Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with Rhino 8. I recently obtained a trial license for version 8 and proceeded with the installation of the software today. Everything seemed to go smoothly with the license key and all. However, upon launching the program, it crashes whenever I try to input a command, like to draw a line. Can anyone assist me with resolving this issue?

Additionally, I would like to change the net framework to 4.8 to install some plug-ins which are suitable for versions 6 & 7. Could you guide me also with this challenge??

Thank you in advance,
Pavlos

Hi there.

are you able to get even as far as posting the results from the _SystemInfo command?

Hello David,

Thank you for your quick reply.

These are the results from _SystemInfo:

.NET Framework 4.8.9181.0

Computer platform: DESKTOP

Standard graphics configuration.
Primary display and OpenGL: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (Intel) Memory: 1GB, Driver date: 3-8-2017 (M-D-Y). OpenGL Ver: 4.3.0 - Build 20.19.15.4624

ATTENTION:

An accelerated graphics device exists and is attached to a monitor, but it’s not being used by Rhino.

  • Recommended: Use Windows’ Display Settings to configure the monitor attached to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, to be the “Main Display”.
  • Any hardware configuration or cabling changes you make will require that you restart Rhino.

Looks like Rhino is telling you a problem.

You need to direct Windows to use the GTX 1060 for Rhino, as it seems to be placing Rhino onto the Intel HD Graphics iGPU.

Also, check for updated drivers from Nvidia.

Follow the recommendation to change the main display, and see if this improves your result.

My guess is that you have one monitor attached to the motherboard HDMI/DP port, and a secondary monitor in the GTX 1060?

Hello, I followed every step you mentioned and still, I am encountering the same problem.

However, would you also assist me in changing the net framework to 4.8 in Rhino?

Thank you

Out of curiosity, what is your natural “baseline” RAM usage in Windows?

Just as a sanity check, it is also best to post your newly changed _SystemInfo.

I’m afraid I am not a .NET user in this case, but I am sure someone can resolve that part of the issue.

Hello,

Your driver is still stating as follows:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (NVidia) Memory: 6GB, Driver date: 6-8-2023 (M-D-Y)

You can go directly to this page, and download the latest driver for your GPU here:

In addition, it still seems like Rhino is still being forced onto your Intel iGPU

ATTENTION:
Desktop is using the slower, less reliable integrated graphics device and probably needs a configuration change.

An accelerated graphics device exists and is attached to a monitor, but it’s not being used by Rhino.

You need to go to the Windows 10 “Display” settings, and then you can select the monitor that is attached to the nvidia GPU. Highlight that monitor, and then use the checkbox for “Make this my main display”.

Cheers.

Hello David,

Just a moment ago I saw your messages and I tried to follow the instructions you mentioned.

I think the problem now is fixed as I don’t get any attention messages from rhino:

Nevertheless, I would like to ask one more thing, please…

I have a plug-in that works for Rhino 6&7 but not for version 8 since the related company is still working on it. They suggested me to download Rhino 8 and switch the net framework to 4.8. Could you guide me with this challenge or share any useful links with relevant instructions??

BR,
Pavlos

Hi Pavlos.

These results look much better for the moment. Hopefully you may get some better results.

To repeat, I am not a .NET user directly, but you can follow this guide here to change the config pointing:

Hi Pavlos -

Use the SetDotNetRuntime command to switch to NETFramework.

I’d plug that one into the GeForce as well…
-wim

Hello Wim,

I followed your instructions but the plug in still is not running. It gives an error message:

Hi Pavlos -

In that case, you will have to contact the author of that plug-in.
