Rhino 8 CPU Overload

Test.3dm (886.7 KB)

Dear McNeel, dear Forum,
like other users CPU goes overloading.

i.e. Loading attached file ‘Test.3dm’ → Select wall → Properties → click on Material → overload CPU (just after several seconds opens Material Panel)

i.e. Loading Rhino Sample Models ‘SubD Helmet.3dm’ as soon as I apply a textured material from Rhino Library goes in overload without any chance to do nothing, although I can use simple Window programs yet. Techincally Rhino doesn’t crash, just think :-).

In my case something let me think the issue could be caused by using textured materials. In the attached file seems to be no textures, but I tried it. No issue with files without textures.

At first I thought a different need to manage ram resources from Rhino too, no issue with Blender Cycles, I had just 6 GB, but after upgrading to 12 I have the same issue

Thank you,
Bartle
PS I hope I was clear, English isn’t my language, sorry.

This should be fixed in what will become Rhino 8.5. I have sent you a link in a direct message to try.

edit/addendum:

The material icon issue you are seeing is because you have Viewport Sharpness set to something non-zero. In anything prior to Rhino 8.4 this was still a bit of a bug, but with Rhino 8.5 in the very least all of that has been fixed and stabilized. Parts that have been improved:

  • Viewport Sharpness actually works
  • Multiple GPU rendering possible (same rendering technology)
  • Automatic resolution division in the viewport through heuristics by Cycles (in 8.3 there is a non-functional Viewport Responsiveness slider - in 8.5 this has been dropped since it is no longer required).
  • Much improved handling of recompiling kernels. A couple of new buttons are available in the Rhino Render options dialog page
  • A whole load of fixes to materials, decals, color mask, etc

When you say 'S’upport. Wow.

Everything solved. You made may day.
A bit unresponsive in some cases, but it doesn’t matter when you are in love, Rhino user since Rhino 2, then I know to have an old PC.

Thank you… thank you very much indeed.

Best regards,
Bartle

Have fun using Rhino 8

I just updated to Rhino 8.5 and my CPU jumps to 100% use whenever I type any command. I did not have this issue with 8.4. Help?

Does this happen when you type _Box in a completely empty document?

Yes it was happening with the _Box command. I uninstalled and reinstalled and seems to be fine now.

ok, let’s hope that it was the reinstall needed.

Yes, hopefully. Thank you Nathan.
