I don’t care about UI. I have set it up to be close to V7 and I use custom shortcuts mostly.
V8 is terribly slow compared to V7 and, knowing I have to be learning it, I don’t have the patience and I can’t afford wasting my time. With each V8 session it takes 30 min or so before I go back to V7.
Anything related rendering is absolutely no-go zone (materials, environment, mapping etc) and it’s pity because I like the new push-pull and some new additions.
I keep explaining myself that reason is below the keyboard (literally) but I can’t afford the machine that would be significantly faster than the one I am having. So, some of the V8 problems may be related to the faster computation demand.

If you can quantify any of the statements it might help to make things better. Things like ‘terribly slow’ or ‘absolutely no-go zone’ doesn’t give much information on what is happening at your end.
In my world ‘terribly slow’ means more than 10 sec. and this is how much it takes to load, edit or remove materials from panel, Same for environments.
Very often, after manipulations of such kind, the overall performance drops significantly and there is no, or delayed response from my 3d mouse. No such things in V7.
It looks like V7 is better optimised for older machines like mine:

Thanks for the post. I find myself experiencing the same thing with the no-go zones you mentioned, giving up and going back to R7. In addition to the bugs, most actions seem slower in R8 for me except for the shaded viewport display, which is super fast.
I’ve reasoned that I’ll need to buy a new computer in order to use R8, and so far it wouldn’t be for much benefit. I hope that’s not true but I’m afraid it might be.

You might want to make two changes for now to regain a bit more performance while we look into this:
- Nudge the sharpness slider one or two notches to the left from pixel perfect. This setting affects both previews and Raytraced.
- In Tools > Options > Advanced search for
PreviewSamples
and set it to something lower, say 10. This setting affects only previews.
Done that. I will write later about my experience.
Edit:
It is still slow. To display the material palette takes ca. 2min!
Windows hourglass can spinn for up to 20-30 sec. after leaving material panel.
lol it takes 5 min. how possible to close preview?
In v8.9 one can turn off the thumbnails by setting EnableGLPreview and EnablePreview to false in Advanced settings and restarting Rhino.
EnablePreview is for rendered previews and EnableGLPreview is for the initial quick preview. Maybe try to turn off the rendered previews first and see if that helps. Also one can try to turn off both and see if that helps performance.
Please fix this issue. It’s so painful. None of your suggestions work.

hi @aidan.newsome To make sure there is no influence of third party applications when investigating this issue, could you disable all of them and see if the issue persists?
Additionally, if you can send a model that shows the performance issue, we can have a closer look to try and find the bottleneck.

yes please fix the material previews in the material tab. I can see each of my material thumbnail trying very hard to render in cycles. This is making texture heavy files almost unusable.
The Rhino 7 material tab is much faster.
Same problem here. When dealing with larger files with lots of materials the material tab with its previews buffering makes the file almost unusable in R8.
