Rhino 8 - Concerns Regarding R8 Performance

Dear Rhino Team,

I want to express my sincere admiration for the Rhino team and my overall satisfaction with working with Rhino. Your team has consistently delivered a great product over the years. However, I feel compelled to share some feedback:

I’ve been a Rhino user since V2, and it has been our primary 3D tool at our company for a decade. Until recently, we have always been delighted with the performance and the continuous improvements with each new version. Unfortunately, since upgrading three of our licenses to R8, we have encountered significant issues.

The problems include lagging display performance, delays in selection, Rhino and system crashes. It feels somewhat akin to a product that ripens with the customer, resembling a beta-testing phase rather than a stable release for commercial use.

While I understand that issues can arise during the development process, it’s concerning when such challenges persist after the product has been officially released. Consequently, we have decided to roll back to R7 and eagerly anticipate updates that address these issues and make R8 a more suitable choice for our workflow.

Best regards,
Robert

Please disable 3rd Party Plugins that do not ship with Rhino and update your video driver.

If you are still seeing an issue please provide the details and we’ll dig into it. Thanks

I do see one crash report, these are really helpful so please do submit

Rhino 8.3.24009.15001 (windows) crashed on Feb 13 after running for 1 days 2 hours 35 mins

Dear Japhy, I appreciate your prompt response! I’ll proceed with updating my NVIDIA driver.

Regarding third-party plug-ins: Our rendering engine is Vray, a vital tool in our workflow. Historically, our process involved modeling in Rhino and rendering in Cinema, which proved to be quite challenging. The seamless integration of both tasks within Rhino was a significant relief. Reverting to the Rhino to Cinema workflow is not a viable option for us. Consequently, we will remain with R7 for the time being.

Best,

Robert

Hi Robert -

Disabling this plug-in is merely a step to troubleshoot the issue you are having, not a suggested solution.

Hi Wim,
Thank you. I have also understood that.
Of course, I can try disabling Vray (btw the only 3rd party plugin I’ve loaded), and if the problem persists, we’ll know that it probably isn’t related to Vray… I’ll get back to you asap.
Best,
Robert
