Rhino 6 on POP!_OS (Ubuntu 20.04) through Wine

Hello!

Support’s assistance is needed with resolving Rhino installation on Ubuntu Linux through Wine and PlayOnLinux.
This will allow work in Rhino outside of a Virtualbox where GPU passthrough is needed to activate, rendering, shading and the cycles renderer for work with 3D models. Passthrough is untested due to the difficulty in blacklisting 1 of 2 same model GPUs to work with VirtualBox. VirtualBox have also dropped the capability completely in version 6.1.

Rhino Bootstrapper installer fails when used through Wine 5.0.1 stable with error:
“Download and Cache Failed with error code :0 .”
Failure occurs at:
“Installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (x64) - 14.25.28508”
With an additional error pop-up of:
“The program rundll32.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close…”
Second attempt results in a failure at:
“Caching Rhinoceros 6 Language Pack Installer (en-US)”
With the same error pop-up:
“The program rundll32.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close…”
The error pop-up needs to be closed twice before the rhino installer outputs the error:
“Download and Cache Failed with error code rhino.msi:-2147023293 .”

Tried both, installing with the conventional installer to no avail either.

Hopefully the logs attached are helpful.

Rhino 6 log - Wine 5.0.1 Installation.zip (13.9 KB)

Those logs are more useful for Wine devs. From our side there is no effort in getting this to work. There are some users here on the forum who say they got it working. A search on this forum should get you to those topics.

Not sure this will help. I ran into this error as well with Wine 6.21, but the installer succeeded under Wine 5.7 (installed with Lutris).
Also, following this guide, I installed p7zip p7zip-full p7zip-rar curl wget winbind cabextract and ran winetricks corefonts gdiplus dotnet48.
