As the title says…well I don’t know if it’s a “good” idea or a symptom of something else but it would in an instant fix a huge portion of the hassle I have using History.
Hi Jim - just in case: you can turn on History at any time before the command ends, to have it recorded, and you can force History with the ‘#’ prefix to any command that can use History, without changing the global setting. (’%’ to force it off)

This would fall under the request I made some time ago: Idea: "Undo2" - Go back 1 step in current or previous command
