Raytrace impossible to use in Rhino 8

I can not figure out why Raytrace mode locks up my system, it’s not underpowered by any means.
Everytime I switch to Raytrace the GPU goes to 100% usage and everything on my system locks up.
Is there some settings I need to change. Here are my specs.

i9-12900K
Windows 11
64gb RAM
AMD Radeon Vega 56 GPU

If you could post the results of the Rhino command _SystemInfo, we can help identify potential bottlenecks.

Sure thing:

Not sure why it would be bogged down - is this with even just a simple box?

Since you are driving two separate displays with the GPU it can cause some resource contention issues.

Also, your OpenGL level is not set to the highest - did you turn it down for some reason?

I haven’t followed AMD GPU development much, but the Vega 56 is based on GCN5 and I believe the newest/upcoming is RDNA3 architecture. I am under the impression that Cycles performance is better on RDNA-based architectures. Again, I don’t follow this much, although I have tried with an AMD Radeon Pro W7800 and that appeared to be working reasonably well.

Not sure what to advise here - maybe try Rhino 8.3 service release candidate (Help > Check for Updates…, set update frequency to service release candidate), see if it is any better?

I do use two monitors and I did turn down the OpenGL to see if it changed anything, but it didn’t.
I installed Rhino 8 on another PC with a Quadro P2000 GPU and it works fine, slow, but it doesn’t lock up the PC. The VEGA 56 locks it up even with a simple cube.

I’ll try the release candidate but i may have to switch to an NVIDIA card.

That’s the issue right there, Nvidia is better :face_with_hand_over_mouth: :relieved:

you will be much happier with an Nvidia RTX card .

more cuda cores and more vram = more better.
get the most of each that you can afford. Ebay has some great deals on used cards with very good specs.

I’m using an older quadro rtx 5000 with 16 gb vram and it works great.

Ordered an RTX3070. That was the extent of what I could afford.

I’m sure that will work perfect.

I used to have issues back in the day when I was using ATI AMD cards. I went with an Nvidia FX3800 in those days, and never turned back.

I used to dream about going high end with ATI AMD, but these days there’s really no point anymore. Nvidia is dominating.

I built a new computer last yr for a colleague, with an RTX 4000. I basically have duplicate parts for another one I plan to use. Haven’t done extensive testing yet, but I’m confident these two computers are beasts.

Switching to an NVIDIA RTX 3070 solved the problem. Goodbye AMD Radeon cards…I’m done with you.
