Project a line to a mesh gives at least 2 results as if clones

draw line project to a mesh in an ortho view.,
expect and get a few wavy curves but when I click one it offers all the curve or a segment.
select the all curve, move aside to reveal a 2nd one, made of segments.

Why should a mesh do that ?
Its not grouped to one on a turned off layer.

put it back, then hide it, repeat on the others, hiding the continuous ones, then select and zap whats left.

Why do I have to separate out a single continual curve from a load of bits for each curve projected to a mesh ?
