Print a png with a transparent background (Rhino 8)

Hallo dear developer,

since I use Rhino 8, I can’t print png files with a transparent background, but there is always a white background. I have no problems with Rhino 7.
There are some problems, because I tried all the options available but I can’t solve it.

Thanks and best regards

Have you tried _ViewCaptureToFile?

Hi John -

The feature request is on the list as RH-10758 Transparent background
-wim

Why do people use “Print” to not print, or at least to “print” to anything but PDF? I’ve never even thought of doing such a thing. Rendering and viewcapture are for making bitmaps.

@J-Rob This command is for PNG output with transparency and I always use it, and there is no white background opening in any other applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or powerpoint…when you print it on white paper, transparent regions are “ white paper”. Maybe I do not understand in your situation, transparent becomes white.

This is akin to asking why people press the camera shutter on a phone instead of taking a screenshot.

People want to have the option to generate an image file without background color while keeping the other settings - lineweight, dimensions, margins, scale, etc.

This may very well not matter in some workflows, but for sure would be a healthy addition.

yet I’m pretty sure that in Rhino 7 at some point the “printed” background was transparent, because I used it often.

There are approximately 15 other ways of doing that than this obscure relic of a Windows 3.1 feature, or just better overall workflows.

If you could provide the community with some of those 15 other ways, it would be greatly appreciated.

This feature never existed in Rhino. Maybe you were running the ViewCaptureToFile command instead?
