Poor results with eGPU

Hi, finally I tried something I wanted to try since a long time – eGPU.

Unfortunately, results I got in Rhino viewports are worrying. It’s stated in several places that Rhino is using eGPU, another proof is rendering with Cycles which is way faster with my eGPU. In some applications, I had big improvements over my laptop.

I will post here all the tests I made - also from other benchmarks and programs, maybe it will be helpful for some of you.

I used Holomark Benchmark in Rhino 7 and 8, TestMaxSpeed command, Furmark 1.13 OpenGL Benchmark, RFO Benchmark for Revit, Unreal Engine Benchmark (Raster and Raytracing)
I’m using MSI GT73VR laptop with GTX 1070 (8GB vram) graphics and Razer Core X eGPU with RTX 3060 (12GB vram).

All test were run on the external monitor, Holomark was run at 2560x1440p resolution.

TL;DR
My eGPU RTX3060 is giving me sometimes worse performance in Rhino viewports than internal GTX 1070. My Thunderbolt 3 connection is fine. Where might be the problem?

The 1070 is a very capable card and it might benefit a bit from being internal.

It’s not that bad indeed, but your link compares desktop cards. Here is 3060 desktop vs 1070 mobile.

FurMark OpenGL benchmark shows a big difference in favor of RTX 3060. I know it’s not a real-life scenario usage but anyway, 0 performance gain in Rhino Viewport is disappointing.
I choose 3060 because it has 12 GB vram, 3070 has only 8 GB so the next card I can check is 3080 or 3090. I don’t care that much about Thunderbolt bottleneck at the moment I need a card with big amount of vram for UE5, later on, I will switch to PC and some kind of remote desktop when needed.
