Hi all,
I recently bought a Dell XPS15 9560 with 32gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 1050 4gb, Intel i7 quad core and the performance with Rhino 5 is quite disappointing, even very small files don’t run smoothly.
I tried the holomark 2 test and these are the results:
Seems pretty poor compared to other results I’ve seen for computers with similar setups, does anybody have any idea of what can cause the problems?
Or there are no problems and my computer is and will remain slow with rhino?
I’m not all that familiar with the Holomark tool. I can’t tell if the test was run using the Intel HD 630 or your GeForce.
In Rhino Options > View > OpenGL, is that option page describing the Intel chip or the nVidia GeForce?
Based on many years of tech support, my guess is you need to get you new system updated and running correctly. It new so it needs to be setup. New computer never are.
Check with Dell to see if there are any updates.
Run Windows’ Check for Updates, install them, reboot, and check again.
Did you resolve the issues the the graphics card and Rhino slowness, as looking to buy that same machine Dell XPS 15 with the same spec but worried i should be going for the Precision 5520 with Xeon and the old Quadro M1200 instead now.
Also goes anyone know which spec is better for Rhino V6.
After spending a few hours on the phone with Dell the performance has improved but not as dramatically as i was hoping. Total score on Holomark 2 is 27000, still low compared to my 4 year old laptop score of 46000!
I realized I have an issue that came up several times on this forum, Rhino seems to have problems recognizing my video card and notes its drivers as N/A. I am trying to solve that problem hoping to finally get the performance i expected, but so far the xps15 has been disappointing.
Have you tried to set the nVidia drivers to force the 1050 to be used for Rhino?
Unfortunately I don’t have a dual card setup, so I can’t show you where and what to adjust, and neither do I remember, but i think you have to set up custom settings for Rhino in the application section of the drivers… Give it a go, and hopefully some one with more recent memory will jump in and help you out.
Hi Holo, yes, that was one of the first things I adjusted.
I tchecked the settings for both Rhino 5 and 6 and bth are force to use the NVIDIA Geforce GTX1050 (instead of the Intel HD 630).
And both Rhino 5 and 6, in their system information, seem not to recognize the driver, below the system info.
I tested both 5 and 6 with a relatively complex model (very small file with several blocks), rhino 6 is definitely faster than rhino 5 but both are not as smooth as I was expecting them on a brand new computer with these specs…

Gigabyte Aero 15 laptop looks like something of interest if you don’t need to stick to dell.
Using dell xps15 now, difficult to say if it’s slow or not… I usually don’t do too much heavy stuff…
and now have external gpu…
Hmmm… got a xps15 9560 as well…
Driver Date:NA / Driver Version: NA on my pc as well…
never tried holomark so not sure how it goes… a bit scared to try it… if scores are low I’d also start looking to do something about it…
I’m sure you done it, but is windows on performance setting for power usage? not sure how that changes things…
