PBR material UI question

Trying to finally add the PBR materials into our workflow, I was wondering what the logic behind not having all detailed settings available is - is it to make is simpler visually, conserve memory or? It is actually helpful I think but the only problem I run into is that when trying various combinations of this material settings, I would add a specific setting, adjust parameters and then try to see before/after or compare its effect on the material look. Currently the only way to do this is to delete the particular setting, but when I bring is back, it all resets to default. Would it make sense to add “on/off” checkbox for each added setting? I think it would be quite helpful. Thank you-

Got that, thanks -

RH-64229 PBR materials - toggle channels

-Pascal

+1 for RH-64229.

I just ran into exactly the same issue, and I’m surprised this still isn’t possible.

Thinking about it, I don’t think an additional ON/OFF toggle is even necessary. The existing Detailed settings UI could already provide this behavior naturally.

If I add the Opacity channel, it appears in Detailed settings and becomes active. If I click X, I would expect that channel to become inactive/ignored, while Rhino preserves its settings. If I add it again later, the previous settings could simply be restored.

In other words, only the channels explicitly added to Detailed settings should affect the material.

This would also make the material much easier to understand at a glance. For example, if Specular is not present in Detailed settings, I wouldn’t expect a hidden Specular configuration to still affect the material.

The existing accordion UI already seems sufficient — it just needs the distinction between an active channel and a stored channel configuration.

Any chance RH-64229 could be reconsidered for Rhino 9?

Small update: I just realized that @nathanletwory has retired, so this may have ended up on the wrong radar.

@BrianJ, would you mind taking a look at this for Rhino 9? I think the existing Detailed settings UI could already provide a very natural way to enable/disable individual PBR channels while preserving their settings.

Hi @badileanu ,

Good question and suggestion about saving settings on the material even if the channel is removed. I’ve nudged the issue and asked the assigned developer ( @maxsoder ) on https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-64229
