"Orient on Objects" tool

When I type the “OrientObjectOnObjects” command I got an error.
Do you guys know why this is happening?
error

Looks like your RhinoScript plugin (a built-in Rhino plugin to run RhinoScripts) is not functioning.
I saw this a couple of times lately with recent Rhino Service Releases, happened at random over here.
What happens if you restart Rhino? Or go to Options ? Plugins > find the RhinoScript one and try to load manually ?

This is not a problem with the Orient… plugin but rather Rhino in general, on your end.

Thank you, Jarek. Does Anybody from McNeel could help?
The error said that the Dependent DLL is out of date.Error_02

This is my Rhino version

You may need to try to reinstall or Repair Rhino installation (there should be a repair button in Windows Apps & Features at Rhino 6).

Hello - are you also running V7/WIP for Windows? Have you tried repairing the V6 installation as Jarek suggests?

Is this running in WIP V7?

I don’t seem to be able to install it.
I’m learning sub D modeling in V7 and didn’t realize how many polysurfaces it created when converted.

I don’t see why not although I did not test it or update anything with it since I posted here.
What is the installation problem you see?

I am unable to designate a location for the file when I right click on it. I tried dragging it into 7 but it was not supported by rhino.

what’s the message you are getting when dragging it into Rhino WIP ?

That Rhino doesn’t support it.

Have you tried loading it in?

Over here when I drag the *rhp file into Rhino WIP I get the message that the plugin needs to be unblocked. However following the unblock instruction doesn’t help with anything.
Instead, you can zip the the file and change its extension from zip to rhi, then double-click and follow Rhino plugin installer. That way it works fine over here.
Here is what I did (zipped and renamed file from original post) : OrientObjectsOnObjects.rhi (45.0 KB)

WOW

You’re the man!

Hi @Jarek
I tried using this in WIP 7 and have found that the object I am orienting does not move smoothly on the surface but kind of jumps around on the surface. Have you noticed any issues in 7?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

I have just tested with the latest WIP and all works smooth and OK over here.
So in V6 all works ok, only V7 is problematic on your end?
Are you by any chance using some sort of hi end gaming mouse? (with polling rate more than standard 125Hz)?

best,

–jarek

Hi Jarek

Works fine in 6. Here’s part of a file I’m working with. See if it works for you. Just using a regular mouse.

Cheers
orient objects on objects.3dm (8.9 MB)

Hi Paul,

I took a look at your file which was helpful to figure out what’s going on. Looks like it’s file-specific and not sure why in V6 it would work OK but not in V7. I only tested in V7 and there are 2 things you can do to improve the precision and make it smoother:

  1. in the plugin, press “R” and make sure to uncheck Snap to Vertex / Edge
  2. since the plugin uses RenderMesh as the base for orienting, if you increase the render mesh settings for your base object, it should make things run smoother. I did Angle 1, Ratio 1 Min. Edge Length 0.05 and it helped.

Hope that helps - I don’t have any other ideas.

Best,

Thanks for the tips!

WOW! Thanks a LOT Jarek!

Thanks a lot. cool tool. :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:
