I’m considering a purchase of a Dell XPS 8900 with either a Nvidia Geforce GT730, GTX 745, or GT970 card. I would appreciate your comments or suggestions regarding this choice and the differences in single and dual slot cards. Thanks!
Well the 970 is nice, I just recently got two of them, but I regret it as the the next-gen equivalent(1070) was released just a few weeks later and is much faster and more efficient. The 970’s been around for a while, the 700s are a generation or two behind that.
Thanks for the heads up Jim.

I have a 970 in one machine and just ordered a 1070 to replace the quadro in the other machine too, I’ll probably get it in two days so I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out and how they compare. I was tempted to go for the 1060 as it runs cooler and I didn’t really need the extra speed, but the 1920 vs 1290 Cuda cores were a tempting upgrade for future rendering needs.
@Holo I just found out that I will need to use a quadro in the build because the Geforce aren’t used in Dell professional series. And since the consumer series can’t be modified, I’m looking at the 3240 model. Why are you replacing the quadro? I hear they are supposed to be better than the Geforce series.

I am replacing for a series of reasons:
1- it is old in the tooth (Quadro 4000) and thus not so powerfull any more
2- I just bought a HTC Vive and it needs a powerhouse of a card
3- It is much cheaper than an equivalent quadro.
Hello,
Id also like to know how the gtx745 would fare? Its got 384 cuda cores and 4gb of DDR3 Ram.
Id be using it for Landscape Architecture grad school, and would be using it in conjunction with grasshopper. Would this work well given I might be generating a bunch of layers of topography? Would it render reasonably okay?
Thank you
If you have that card and don’t want to spend money on a new one, I would still sell the 745 and get e.g. a GTX 670, which has 1344 Cuda cores. Since the card thing is pretty confusing perhaps, due to the 4 GB, you even make money.
And ‘one million polygons needs approximately 220MB of memory. So 4GB of memory can hold approximately 18 million polygons.’ So, maybe you just need 2 GB anyway. (I don’t know how many polygons landscape architecture needs…)
I haven’t bought the machine yet, but I just want to know if this would work acceptably? As the next level up seems to be one with a gtx 950 but Id have to spend an additional 200$ on it. Im not cut up to the task of opening the pc up and switching out cards.
Thank you
I wouldn’t get the 950, either. And the 670 is even faster than the 950 and used it’s about € 75.
