OpenUSD and the Future of Rhino

I post this hoping to start a discussion. I don’t know what a solution is and I’m not experienced enough to offer more than my opinions.

Apple, Nvidia, Autodesk, Adobe, and Pixar recently announced the Alliance for OpenUSD, and organization which “aims to standardize and develop a technology called Universal Scene Description (USD) that was originally made by Pixar. The technology lets developers move their work across a world of 3D creation tools, making it much easier for developers to build 3D experiences for everything from VFX and animation (where it’s already been widely adopted) to gaming, VR, and metaverse applications.” to quote theVerge.com (Why Apple bet on Pixar tech to make the metaverse work - The Verge).

What are the plans for USD in Rhino? VR is coming soon and rhino could be a powerful tool to create advanced 3d assets, especially when considering how Rhino is used for many professional CAD applications. Having USD support would be huge in allowing our community to participate in the shift to VR.

I especially think the participation of McNeil could greatly advance this standard. I haven’t looked through all the documentation yet, but I suspect that currently these models are primarily mesh based. It would be cool to see more adoption of Nurbs and similar geometry in such formats, effectively helping to making 3d equivalent of vectors vs raster in 2d documents.

We need 3D file format which makes our work as simple as linking the 3D file to our HTML file. All existing “virtual reality” 3D file formats require TONS OF PROGRAMMING in addition to making the 3D file.

Any format will require tons of programming, old, current or future.

Try dotbim  GitHub - paireks/dotbim: Minimalist file format for BIM

Writing a tools for it takes a couple of hours most of the time from start to finish. Obviously the price is its limitations, but for many tasks it’s enough
