Numeric Gumball Extrusion in SubD?

Hi guys,

I do Ctrl+Shift+Drag gumball scale handle to 3D extrude + Scale in SubD.

  • Can I do that with a numeric value?

When I use normal extrude command ( with numeric input) it just doesn’t work as with the gumball extrusion

Extrusion with the gumball is only possible with one direction at a time.

If the faces have different orientations, you need to use the _ExtrudeSubD command.

if you press Shift while dragging the scale handle it will extrude in the 3 directions, I am talking about subD

When using the scale handle, it’s a transformation, not an extrusion.

Here I’m using the command _ExtrudeSubD with the direction set to N for normal

If you want to enter a number, hold Ctrl + Shift down while clicking the scale handle (don’t drag).

The command line seems to be the cause of confusion here. Whenever we drag the scale or even the rotation handle, it says ‘press Control to extrude’.

With the gumball plane, you can move an object on a plane (in two directions) simultaneously. You can extrude by pressing the Control.

The result in the first video is not a proper extrusion of the faces. It’s a scaling operation which only works for the central faces of this 3 x 3 cube and even then the resulting faces are larger than the original faces.

Rhino is lacking this multi Gumball functionality which T-Splines had years ago.

the thing is that some times extrude SubD doesn`t flow smoothly, as i am showing in the last image

It’s true, but Rhino itself calls this extrude. It’s weird.

yes man that’s exactly what i am after in your first video.

For some reason I can`t replicate that.

1.you select the faces
2. press ctrl+shift, then leave them or still hold?
3. click on any scale handle then type the value?

You may want to post your Rhino file…

Hold down Ctrl + Shift, then click on the handle. Then let go of both the mouse and keyboard.

Remember, as @martinsiegrist pointed out, this operation isn’t an extrude. For extrusion, you should use the extrudeSubD command.
