Sounds like you are asking for parametric modeling?
Rhino is not a parametric modeler, although there are a few functions that store a history to some extent, so its possible to get a kind of limited parametric functionality.
Rhino has Grasshopper which is used to create models which can be modified by changing parameters. The methodology is different than many “parametric” or “proceedural” modelers.
nice, i see that boolean operations now work with history since v8.
here it might be useful to have an option to add objects to the history, add a little manager that shows what is being used and you have your parametric modelling already. with history we are not that far away from being parametric, its just a bit awkward through its non existent UI, if that would get added in the way of showing objects, being able to add, remove, that would be quite a step and maybe not such a huge effort to implement?
cool, we can now chop up an object set the cutters to wire and you can move them almost in real time around, would be really good if one could see an instant refresh of the boolean action if wanted, just like clipping planes do.
talk about clipping boxes which people asked for. seems we could use this instead to get clipping boxes and whatnot?
I guess you’re asking about parametrics or history, but the term “non-destructive modeling” is a term from old mesh editing tools that doesn’t apply to NURBS.
Without some sort of history, when you punch a hole in a mesh, the stuff inside the hole is actually gone. With NURBS when you trim a hole out of a surface you’re actually ADDING information to the object, the base surface is still there. So if you split 90 windows out of a surface of the fuselage of an airplane, you now have 91 copies of that entire surface until you run ShinkTrimmedSrf to actually destroy unwanted extra information. So even Rhino’s “explicit” modeling still has a tiny bit of sort-of-something built in at the most basic level, and that ability is the killer feature of NURBS that explains why all CAD systems use it and all the pretenders to the throne (subdivision surfaces) have been relegated to the dustbin of…the over twice-as-big field of modeling for games and movie effects.
Is it possible to configure more features in GUMBALL?
thanks
I don’t care about the gumball.
