do you think this has to do with Rhino “core” or with some new plug-in that you might have installed recently?

This turned out to be caused by some fingerprint-secured encrypted file storage software on the computer. I guess Rhino is the only software I use that happens to use that particular save dialog or something? I uninstalled the encryption software (came preinstalled) and the problem went away.
