Hello All. New to Rhino. Still learning how to properly model. I have a shape I’m trying to create and I’m not understanding what I need to do or how to properly describe it. See attached picture [Example1] Basically I’m trying to attach an arch shaped surface to a 90˚ corner and have the blended shape between them be more smooth. The blended shape moves from the arch smoothly but as it gets closer to the 90˚ obviously it’s going to have more of and edge to it. But I’d like to be able to smooth this out a bit more… and in my head there is a way to do this. Anyone have any advice? Also here is a link to a QT movie showing it. [ExampleQTMovie]

By invoking “blend” you are giving it conflicting information. On one hand you want it smooth, but you give it a sharp corner, so it correctly transitions the sharpness across the shape. One way to do it, If you want it smooth, is try to construct the smooth shape first (with a network srf, or a loft) and THEN trim it at the intersection. Hi Drew- if I understand, you want the crease at the corner, but you want it to fade, correct? I don’t know if this is different or any better than what you have- edgeFade.3dm (166.9 KB) -Pascal

ThomasAn- YES! Exactly What I’m trying to do. So simple. Thank you!

Thanks Pascal. Much appreciated.

Hey ThomasAn… Quick question. When I did the same technique… it worked great. Was looking at the model you sent. The volute (is that the correct term) you made on the left is an open poly. The one on the right is a trimmed surface… How did you convert the open poly to a trimmed surface and what was your reasoning for doing it?

oh, they are not two steps. What I am showing in that file is two versions. One using loft (the simpler surface) and another solution using network srf (it has many more isoparms, I tend to avoid it, but gives you more control on its shape). Somehow Rhino, when doing the loft, it made it in two pieces as a polysurface. By “trimmed surface”, I take it you mean the networkSrf version. You use the red guide curves along with the surface edge arc as inputs for NetowrkSrf. (Note: for the loft version you also select the edge arc and then choose “Match start tangent”) GuitarNeck.3dm (152.6 KB) [ViewCapture20240124_082549]

Gotcha! Thank you!

5 sided hole Rhino for Mac

Hi. I’m a backyard CNC’er who has been content to sandpaper artefacts due my lack of skill with rhino. However I have seen videos of very complex surfaces being modelled simply and quickly and I would like to move in that direction. I have a five sided hole that I can cover and sand in a number of ways by trial and error but I hope someone can at least outline a strategy that will let me put a surface on this simply and with ‘good practice’. Pic enclosed. Thanks, Rob. [five sided hole.]

Guitar neck/volute issues Rhino

Hi All, I am new to Rhino3d (love it BTW) and I am coming to Rhino3d from Fusion360(have hated it a while now). I am attaching the file I have been working from and hopefully it will tell the tale better than I. I do have a bunch of patches that kinda work to illustrate how I want things to flow but there is no way that I know of yet to make it clean and able to be made into a solid for the CNC side of things. In short, I am trying to make the back of the neck a smoother transition into the v…

Sweep 2 Problem in Neck/Headstock Transition Rhino for Mac

Hello All - I’m brand new to Rhino and am Tele Headstock Issues.3dm (425.5 KB)having trouble getting the curves to become solids in my guitar neck. I need a flat spot for my locking nut, but those curves seem to “wrinkle” or somehow ruin the smooth transition from the back of the neck to the headstock. I managed to get an okay transition at the heel with Sweep 2, but I’ve hit a wall with the headstock. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bill

Guitar Neck: MatchSrf Between a loft and a trimmed Surface? Rhino

Hello Folks, i have a loft and a trimmed surface that i got as a result of using XNurbs, but there’s gaps and not so smooth transitions when using Zebra. Can you MatchSrf These 2 different types of Surfaces? What would you reccomend to do in this case? The red surface is trimmed (XNurbs) and the Blue is a Loft. Naked Edge at single point - Can't close polysurface - Electric guitar neck Rhino for Mac

Hello, I am modeling a guitar neck, and I’ve closed up almost the entire polysurface, except for a single point that is showing as a naked edge. I’d like to create a solid, for further editing and for CNC milling. I’m attaching a photo of the point (lower middle part of photo), and also the file itself. I’ve tried JoinEdge and MatchSurface. Thanks very much for your help! Sincerely, TM! Screen Shot 2019-12-17 at 9.06.35 PM|667x499 NeckOnly.3dm (409.4 KB)

Help with instrument neck surfacing issues? Rhino for Windows

Hello everybody, I’m completely new to Rhino (and really CAD in general) as of this week, so I apologize ahead of time for the numerous issues there likely are with my approach to design here. I’m attempting to create a banjo neck and I was very loosely following the methods applied in a Rhino guitar neck video I found on YouTube by Helix Guitars (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLaPAeKPuqA&t=2016s). I never could get the network surfacing he was demonstrating to work, so most of the surfaces ar…
