Okay, I hate to do it, but I think it’s time for a new computer. I’ve been reading a bit about options of building one and that’s going to take some time. What I’m really wondering about is operating system. I’ve been running Win 10 and have been reasonably happy with it, but not sure I can still get Win 10 and not sure I want Win 11. But going to Linux seems a huge jump and when I tried Linux 10 years ago I gave up because programs kept crashing. Does Rhino run well on Linux? What about Win 11??
BTW, I’ve been working for the last 5 years on a Dell Precision 3530 laptop that does have NVidia graphics. It has worked well for me. I don’t do a lot of rendering. Most of what I do is fairly detailed shop drawings for ornamental ironwork. Rendering is fairly simple. I sometimes do files for 3D printing for castings. I also do a fair amount of C# programming in Grasshopper and use Visual Studio to create libraries that I use in C# script components. I’ve been working on doing some parametric design on ironwork projects. So, if I were to go to Linux I’d have to have C# programming ability also.
thanks,
Joe
no. if at all then just partially and from what i haven taken from the Linux topic which is running hot here since forever is that there is no real good solution to this and the one person who seemed to have managed never showed up again. but i might have everyhing backwards since i did not read the entire humongous topic.
did you consider Apple Silicon? i have an M1 MacStudio Ultra, its silent, powerful and does not give me any issues, besides the ones the developers for Rhino generally keep throwing our ways.
Hi @Joe4
I too had to make the jump as my old laptop didn’t have the specs for my newer work. MS is stopping support of win10 in 2025 I don’t think you can buy it currently if you get a new computer.
I’m mostly happy with win11, some small stupid stuff like all win updates but it’s pretty much the same. I did find some bull with renaming files and recent files not being on certain areas where they were in win 10 but for the most part no big deal so far.
Rhino 7 runs better for me on this new computer, quite robust and I work on large files many times. Don’t know how V8 runs on win 11.

Windows 10 has only about a year left until they stop supporting it…
Indeed. It’s hard to believe…
Thanks, all for the comments. I finally wised up and looked at system requirements for Rhino which tells me no Linux. It looks like I’m stuck with Win 11 but at least I’ve got one data point about R7 running okay on it.
