Hi,
Sharing a real pain in the… this issue is very annoying & breaking workflow every, almost every, file load.
The “Missing image file” popup almost every time i load a file,
In some cases Rhino did created materials folders, so i “replace” files and its kind of momentary solution.
I do use materials for rhino render purpose, some of the materials where imported and are saved locally in the materials library.
Checking the “Save textures” when saving a new files, sometimes rhino create materials folder and sometimes not, as you can see in the screenshot, material folder was not created.
I do work with two machines, office & home, moving file back & forward, and when doing that the popup keeps poping.
This issue is bothering me since Rhino 7 was released but i was to lazy writing a post… :nerd_face:

I sync between multiple machines and use the default of -Save SaveTextures=Yes as well. Rhino still generates these sidecar folders:

I regularly delete them, and the only time I get those texture missing pop-ups is when I open v5 files. I think v5 defaulted to SaveTextures=No and all of my pictures pasted from the clipboard were saved to the AppData’s Temp folder and deleted long ago.

If it’s not limited to v5 files, it will likely help someone from McNeel if you post your _SystemInfo and an export of your options to help troubleshoot:

It could also be a plugin saving to AppData\Local\Temp even if you have -Save SavePlugInData=Yes. Post an _Audit3dmFile of a file that loads with missing pictures.

Hi,
Crossgems plugin staff recommended me to check “saving texture” indeed and not to clean the Windows Temp folder, especially the “embedded_files” folder, but it is not a complete guaranty.
We can send an e-mail to support@mcneel.com to explain them the situation or get more info from their point of view ?

Hi Gilad -

The word “almost” in that sentence is troublesome. Can you reproduce the issue from scratch starting with a blank file from a factory-default template?

Those two things are not really completely related. Saving textures when saving files should make it so that you don’t get the “Missing image files” dialog when opening a file, but the folder that is created is not created when saving a file, but when opening a file. The images are, when textures are saved, saved in the 3dm file. When you open a 3dm file, Rhino, and its plug-ins need to be able to access those images from a folder on your machine. It’s at this point that the folder is created, and the images from within the 3dm file are put inside that folder.

If you can provide reproducible steps to have this missing image files dialog pop up, you can either post those here or send those to the email address.

Hi @wim,

  • Missing image…dialog, does pop out every time i open a file that was transfer from Work Machin to Home Machin 7 & vice versa.
  • <FileName>_embedded_files folder does not gets created with my Rhino 8 Version.
  • “saving texture” is checked.
  • At the initial post, a screen capture of the Missing…pop out, Rhino 8 is not looking for a previews Material folder but is searching for the material images at App Data.
  • I already am in contact with Support.

Hello, i’m facing the same problem here. I recently bought a new computer and turn my old laptop with a lot of storage into a “server” so I can acess all my files. Tried to open my current project file and had this bad surprise. @Gil_K have you managed to solve this?
