Maximum size of imported STL?

I’m trying to import a 4.6GB stl into Rhino 6 (64bit, 128GB RAM) but it’s giving me “bad” data, meaning it opens and shows approximately 20% of what’s correct. The other 80% is missing from view, and I verified the file is error-free in other software (Meshlab). The file in question has about 90 million faces.

I’ve successfully opened a similar but smaller stl file, 1.9GB and 39 million faces.

Is there a magic number of faces that I should try to keep my files under?

Hi Brent - I do not know the answer to that - my guess is maybe the limitation is in display - can you select what you do see? And if so, does the What command tell you anything about the number of faces?

Thanks Pascal,

Below is a screencapture of what I see in Rhino - it should appear as a complete kneeling human figure. The “what” command says it’s a valid mesh with the correct number of faces.

I’m using a W7100 8GB graphics card

Hi Brent - it looks like maybe it’s all there but the view is being clipped - can you Zoom Extents and get a better view? What happens if you run BoundingBox (output=Lines for now)?
