Materials panel in Rhino 8

I see the paint tube in the menu bar on the right but when I touch it or click nothing happens. How do I access materials?

you can access panels by clicking on the gear icon in any container

Alternatively, run _Materials

Thank you but I still can’t see where I import textures. The change s in R8 are, it seems to me, less user friendly than in R7.

I stand corrected, I found the window or panel or whatever its called for importing materials.

Once again, I found the Rhino textures but I have quite a few PBR’s and I don’t see how I can apply them to my object.

You apply them the same way as in Rhino 7

Hello Nathan,
I got that part but the difficulty is the process of finding the material window. I clicked on « materials » in « panels » and wherever I saw « materials » and the window appeared almost magically. For whatever reason finding and manipulating « materials » is much more cumbersome than in R7.

Perhaps using the Rendering window layout may help find things more easy?

Gives something like this on the right-hand side:

Thanks but I got this.

Hi Nathan,
I think I got it right. I answered no to the message and once again clicked on rendering and the tube appeared in the right side bar with the window to choose materials.
Thanks
Joe

Thank you

Hi Nathan,
Is there a tutorial for the manipulation of materials for R8? In relation to R7 I am lost.
Thanks
Joe

no change from how materials behave or are manipulated in v7 vs v8

Hi, I don’t agree. The window is not the same and the slider for changing values is not very sensitive. I don’t see that object properties act on textures or that using box-type materials or mapping Chanel has much effect on the materials. It may also be that the presentation being very different affects use.

After several days of frustration I’m totally lost on this new R8 container system.

  1. Open a new file and click the gear top RH corner.
  2. Select the panels I want to be able to access.
  3. Whoops -that gear has disappeared but I found a new one over on the LHS.
  4. Show panels. Nothing Happens.
  5. Go to top menu bar. Show Panels. Some of the panels I selected are ticked and some will open in containers. Some don’t.
  6. Where is my list of layers? I have selected them from the gear icon and I have accessed them in earlier attempts but now I can’t activate them under Panels, or Toolbars or Containers or in the horizontal menu across the top of the file.
6.This system is very taxing on my tiny age hardened brain. Maybe a step by step guide when opening a new file would help?

Hi Tony -

Without at least a fullscreen picture, it’s hard to know what’s going on on your system.
If you want the default UI, from the menu bar at the top, pick Window -> Window Layouts -> Default Window Layout.

Also, please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.

Wim, System info enclosed below. Rhino 7 on Mac is working fine. I don’t think it’s a system problem in 8 - I think my brain is trying to make this more complicated than it really is.

Here is a question that might help me figure out what I’m doing wrong.

After I select the panels/tool bars I want access to from the gear icon; what is the next step I should take to activate those panels/ toolbars?

They are showing in grey across the top menu bar. Only the layers container is highlighted. Clicking on these menu items produces no result- not even the layers menu.

There must be some action I need to take that I’m missing? Typing the menu item in the command line doesn’t do anything.

Thanks for your assistance.

Tony

Hi Tony -

I’m not sure why you are not showing a full screen image of the UI as requested?

At any rate, in this image, I’ve done as you have: added the Layers panel to the top horizontal container:

As you see, when that tab is selected, there should be buttons for creating a new layer, filter, columns, tools, and help, apart from inactive buttons. If you want to dock your Layers panel on top, you’ll have to make room for the rest of that panel:

We tend to dock panels that require vertical space to the left or right side of the screen. I can’t tell from your partial screenshot, but, perhaps, the right sidebar is collapsed?

If that is the case, the gear icon for that container won’t show and you’d have to click the fly-out button at the bottom of the screen or any of the visible tabs to show the contents of that sidebar and be able to add new panels or toolbars.

If the right sidebar is not there at all, I’d recommend restoring the default window layout as explained in my previous reply.

Yes right screen bar is collapsed- but when I uncollapse it nothing appears.
