Materials and sub-objects - probably a bug

See attached file with three boxes (and some stuff behind to understand the transparency). Open material properties palette.

First box orange paint. (Correct)
Second box dark blue glass. (Correct)

Now third box had orange paint applied normally.
And then with sub-obj enabled the dark blue glass was applied (a marquee was dragged over all of the third box to select all sub-objects).

Now the third box seem to report sometimes Dark Blue Glass and sometimes “varies” in the material property palette. Click on the boxes back and forth and the material presented will exhibit an “unstable” property.

As far as I understand surfaces can have different materials in one object. But the third box seem to have the same material everywhere, but it still reports (Varies) from time to time.

the proof

Also, SelMaterialName, says this:

Is this a bug? Or is this somehow intended?

While I am at it: Could “Import from Material Library” return to the same folder where it was last time? Would be a bit less irritating.

Thanks
