Macbook Pro trackpad issues - two finger view navigation regularly freezes

Hello,

I have just upgraded to a new 16" Intel MacBook Pro running Big Sur and at the same time upgraded to Rhino 7. MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8 GB.

Two-finger trackpad view navigation (rotate view) regularly freezes for a few seconds. Pinch zoom works fine even when tow-finger navigation when frozen. The interruption to workflow became intolerable and I was forced to revert to Rhino V6 where the problem does not occur.

After some time of it working fine in V6 the same problem is showing up. Maybe it is a compatibility issue with the Graphics card AMD Radeon Pro 5600M?

Are you running an extra monitor?
Any other attached devices?

Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and post the results.

Thanks

Do you see this happening with a specific model and in a specific display mode? Please post a simple file where it happens and also let us know the display mode used and if that mode is set to the default settings.

I would also be interested in knowing if this is really a two-finger trackpad issue or something bottlenecking the pipeline. Try using the “Pan”, “Zoom”, “Rotate” toolbar icons instead (for the time being), and then just use the single finger navigation during those commands to see if things still lag or freeze.

Hi Jeff,

“Pan”, “Zoom”, “Rotate” via buttons and one finger interface all work with immediate response. Two-finger rotate and shift two-finger pan often work, always seem sluggish but often just become unresponsive. two-finger pinch zoom have have not experienced any noticeable delay.

Hi Mark,

I have a new MBP here with the exact same specs as yours. I am not seeing any delay in trackpad navigation with a large file in Rhino 6. Can you provide a 3dm and let me know the display mode you’re in when you see this issue? You can use https://www.rhino3d.com/upload and send it in to tech@mcneel.com just be sure to mention this thread please and that it’s for BrianJ.

I thought maybe the automatic graphics switching in macOS (Settings > Battery) might be at play if you weren’t plugged in but it looks like Rhino 6 is still using the 5600m even if it is on.
