Last summer I took an introductory Rhino course, and while it gave me some exposure to the software, I came away realizing that I learn best from a very structured, well-organized teaching style. I’m now looking for a different instructor or learning resource and would really appreciate recommendations from the community.
A little about my background:
I’m an engineer by training with some, limited CAD experience (SolidWorks, Pro/E, etc.), but I’m new to Rhino.
My long-term goal isn’t architecture or jewelry design. I want to design and build large-scale kinetic sculptures inspired by artists like Anthony Howe and Phil Price.
I’d love to become proficient enough in Rhino to confidently design complex mechanical forms, moving assemblies, and eventually prepare models for fabrication.
What I’m looking for is someone who:
Teaches in a clear, logical progression rather than assuming prior knowledge.
Explains why they’re doing things, not just which buttons to click.
Provides exercises or projects that reinforce the concepts.
Is responsive to questions when students get stuck.
I’m open to live online classes, one-on-one coaching, recorded courses, YouTube channels, or even books if they’re exceptional.
If you’ve had an instructor or course that really accelerated your understanding of Rhino, I’d love to hear about it.
I would highly suggest Sky’s youtube series on Primary Surfacing, especially for sculptural endeavors. Look up “Thirty Six Verts” and you’ll find it.
The thing about Rhino is that are six ways from Sunday to do each and every single command, and varying modeling styles. Best to know them all, but definitely a solid starting point.
You may wanna try Kyle Houchens, who is an amazing instructor. I personally have had maybe 100 private lessons with him over Zoom and he is an incredible modeler and also knows the mechanics of our work.
