Latest update immediately crashing when opening document 8.0.22032.16306

Hi
Just updated to the latest WIP and rhino is immediately crashing when trying to open either a new doc or a previous one with just one sphere

There were no crashes at all until this latest update.
Version 8 WIP (8.0.22032.16306, 2022-02-01)

the only change in my computer was this latest update

thanks a lot
Akash

If you get the crash log maybe post it here?

I just updated to that WIP verison and it starts fine on my M1. I am able to create new documents and open existing ones, even those with Raytraced active.

Hi
discourse won’t allow sending the report here.
I have sent through the crash system 2 - 3 times yesterday, I can send more if needed.
I’m on an intel 2013 MBP,
thanks a lot
Akash

Save it as a text file, then attach the file

here’s the report
thanks

A bit hard to tell for sure but have you tried with disabling the Metal test code?

Perhaps something changed in Metal that is crashing [it was always on and stable until now] But to disable Metal… I’ll have to find a way to open a document first. [unless you have an under the hood way to do that?]

thanks a lot
Akash

Just to make sure, Akash, does Rhino 7 still run as it should?
-wim

Hi Wim
Yes 7 is fine [I’m holding off updating it for now, so it’s on 7.15.22011.07002

thanks a lot
Akash

Just to add that I also tried to open a v7 file in the WIP by assigning the file type to the WIP and clicking on the file instead of starting the WIP first [splash screen] It Crash all the same.

thanks a lot
Akash

Would it be possible to send me a link to the previous build, [until the crash issue with the current is resolved ?]

thanks
Akash

Just install 8.0.22039 the crash still happens on WIP file opening [attached. is the crash report]

Hi Akash -
A few more questions…
Do you remember if you had enabled TestMetal before installing the version that crashes on your system?

OpenGL issues are often the cause of Rhino crashes and, on Mac, they are typically resolved by updating the Operating System. Can you update your Mac to a more recent macOS?

You didn’t specifically point to a previous WIP that worked - here’s a link to the 2022-01-18 version. It’d be interesting to see if that one runs.
-wim

Most likely it was enabled, but I’m not fully sure [made a button to switch it off and on quickly when there’s a display issues and I often toggle it]. *Edit : Just installed the older version and files opens without a crash. and yes Metal was on.

I think I can update to Monterey… It such a [good] old computer, that I wasn’t really going to update it any more. But if that is necessary to run the WIP…? I can try.

thanks a lot
Akash

Hi -

I think that might be worth a try. Make sure to create a Time Machine backup so that you can go back if necessary.

The alternatives are waiting and hoping that this gets fixed all by itself - there is always that possibility but definitely not guaranteed. I had been crashing new WIPs on startup for a while and that went away…
… or trying to bisect the issue to find out which change started crashing on your machine. That is a potentially long drawn process as there are more than 40 different builds between the versions that are now known to be good and bad… (And, as in my case, not necessarily an outcome that clearly points to a cause.)
-wim

Hi Wim
the latest build that worked for me was just 2 builds ago. [meaning the last 2 builds were crashing and the one before that was totally fine…!
there was a security+ update to BigSur just now that I installed. I’ll try updating the WIP on it first. Do you think it is better to toggle Metal off before updating?
*Edit: updating to latest WIP, it still crash. [but forgot to disable Metal before update]

thanks a lot
Akash

Hi Akash -

Not really. It was just 2 public builds ago. There are several internal builds every day.
-wim

Hi Wim
the Crash is still present in today’s Wip 8.0.22047.04306.

is there really nothing that can be done, short of upgrading to Monterey …? [I’m up to date in Big Sur 11.6.3]
thanks a lot
Akash

Fired up the WIP today and I’m getting the same crashes - as soon as I open a file or create new from a template. Not sure when I tried the WIP last (it has been a while). Upgrading to Monterey isn’t an option for me - my old iMac won’t update beyond Big Sur.

Another oddity, I’m not getting any crash reports. Something else to look into later - any suggestions on what/where to check?

Tried rolling back to the version posted above:

No help - same crashes.

I’m hoping to hold off on upgrading to a new mac until the new Apple silicone is a bit more mature. Hope this won’t prevent me from running Rhino V8 when it’s released.

-Kevin

Rhino 8 will run on both Intel based and Silicon Macs
