Importing/copying objects without copying layer structure?

I have set up a template in Rhino with specific layer structure imported from my AutoCAD template.
When I import dxf files (with similar layer structure) into my template the objects are imported as well as the layers, even if I already have these layers in the project. Is there away to avoid this?
