Imported mesh won't display assigned material

Hello, I’m finally getting around to trying to deal with an issue I’ve had for a few years. I purchased some .OBJ and .STL models of people in different poses to put in my presentation renderings. They almost always are imported as a mesh which I then convert to nurbs using the MESHTONURB command. This new polysurface can be switched to different layers, however that polysurface will only show up as a dark gray, no matter what the material is assigned to the layer.

Can someone explain to me what is causing this and how I can rectify it if possible? I feel like I’m just not checking the right setting parameters. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve attached the Rhino 7 file with some of the people models in it.

The people have a gray material assigned.

In the materials panel dropdown, select Use Layer ‘Material’

Voilà:

There is no need to change those to nurbs. It is probably better to keep them as meshes. Meshes can also be switched to different layers.

Do the OBJ models come with textures or vertex colors?.
