What's happening when a material is assigned to a layer, but a mesh is not using it?

I have a mesh imported from a obj file and the other is the extracted render mesh of a simple box. Each is on its’ own layer and the same material is assigned to each layer.

  • The first is not accepting the material, while the box is.
  • When the material is assigned to selection both are rendered blue!
  • And it happens for Rhino Render and Thea.

So I guess it’s not a bug in Thea… But what exactly is going on here??

Is the imported mesh a block? Or maybe material is assigned by object and not layer? --Mitch
