– Discussing with someone Thursday night, there is the theory that the license message is spurious because it’s just a text string somewhere that wasn’t edited correctly and has both V8 and V7 in it. As V7 also shows me the following:
Why should V7 know anything about a V8 license??
At least V7 gets the video driver thing correct - no message.
The video driver notification is shown if the driver date is more than 2 months old. There are no smart analytics associated with it.
Nvidia doesn’t update the drivers for my old Quadro very often so I ignore the notification.
Mostly it’s handy to bring to the attention of people with drivers that are VERY old.
Rhino should let me retain my UI settings, including those for the Notification panel, even if you have a good reason to deny it.
In my case, I claim McNeel doesn’t have a good reason to deny it, yet Rhino 8 continues to claim another docking area’s worth of the screen with this bell thing.
(What is so special about two months’ age on a graphics card company’s drivers? Is 61 days better? How about 59? Who is to say, McNeel or NVidia?)
I beg you, let us turn this Notifications panel off and leave it off.

I tried to make a short gif showing this but failed to bring it in under the 4mb max. But here’s a screenshot instead. Blank gray bar shows up on the right when the Notifications panel becomes the second “panel” in the “container” (did I get the terms right?) that showed only Properties when I last closed Rhino.
Yes, if you have a container with only one panel docked, I guess there will be no tabs.
I have my tabs horizontal, so it doesn’t much matter to me.
But you’re right, if the notifications panel is closed, it shouldn’t automatically open. Or at least have a setting that allows you to choose which kinds of notifications you want it to pop up for (or not).
The phantom Notifications panel has returned. I do not ever want to see it, yet it appeared yesterday. Rhino 8 SR7 2024-4-16 (Rhino 8, 8.7.24107.13001)

I find this rather annoying as well when it happens, and then it goes away again…
[I have a two-letter alias to reinstate my custom Window Layout to make that disappear, but that shouldn’t be necessary.]
I suppose that some conditions are good to be warned about, but this is clearly not one of those cases.
We have a few relevant YTs on the list:
RH-50496 Show New Driver notification more promiently
RH-54400 Driver gripe with it’s 3 days old in Notification panel?
RH-73552 Notification for Display Driver update needs tune-up
But I’ve added RH-84247 Panels: Notifications Panel Forces Docked Panel to Appear
