How to make clipping plane affect just view of mesh?

Hi,
V5,
when I move the clipping plane to cut off part of a mesh, I also lose the curves and points etc I wished to work with. For a moment i thought I had not saved them, but then realise they are hidden by the ClippingPlane.
I only want to vary the view of the mesh.
How is that done ?
