Help With Ring Prongs Looking Square in Render

Hello!

I’m new to jewelry design. I just finished designing a ring, but the prongs in the realistic render look very square and bulky, which doesn’t look great (see below):

After making the physical ring, the prongs are made exactly how I want them - round rather than square. How can I make the prongs softer, less square, and better spaced like the this image from Angara?

Thank you!

Hi Booming,

What is the intended output? Rendering or are you doing as casting as well?

A small example file would be helpful as well (doesn’t need to be the entire ring, just the portion you are having questions on) Thanks!

Hi Japhy,

Thanks for your response! I want to render & use it for casting as well.

Can I DM you the file?

Consider using ShrinkWrap with the Smoothing option set to something of your liking. It’ll soften everything.

I’m not sure that will help here. The Shrinkwrap will likely lose the small cuts to maintain the definition?

Alternatively, there is not an easy fix other than to chop off the crowns and re-extrude normal to the resulting rectangular faces.

Somewhere between may be to apply variable fillets to every outer corner, but this also requires removal of the top faces of the prongs, owing to the existing fillets. Even a mesh smooth will instantly create so many corner errors here between the prongs.

no, set the resolution correctly and then just smooth it. Works great.
