For some reason, the component grouping function is not working for me.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Try right-clicking on the empty canvas just around the components you grouped, if a group menu shows up the group is there but its colour has been set to transparent, same as here.. Can't Group components in Grasshopper - Rhino 6 If not, what version of Rhino are you on and does Edit > Group fail the same way as Ctrl+G? Thanks!
The grouping has always worked for me in the past but suddenly it has stopped working. I have tried it on Rhino8 and also the beta version. Really strange!! It is not a case of the background being invisible as I cannot click on the ‘grouped’ canvas and move it as a single entity.
You may have 3rd party plugin interfering.

To troubleshoot gh plugins you can start grasshopper via the Rhino command line with GrasshopperLoadOneByOne and say no to 3rd party plugins. The first 11 or so are shipped with Rhino.
