Gradual mesh smooth

Hey forum!

I’m doing this 3D sculpture of a friend of mine. Did some cleanup in the geometry, but I’m facing a challenge right now.

The lower part (shoulders and chest) look really noisy or even pointy in some places, but the head looks fine.

I’m trying to smooth ONLY the lower part. Is possible to do that? I tried with grasshopper but got nothing from it

If someone know how to do this, I’m glad for the help!

Hello - enable SoftTransform, set an appropriate falloff radius, select the vertices (sub object select) to smooth 100% and run the Smooth command - the smoothing will fall off from the selected vertices across the falloff radius.

Thank you for the quick reply Pascal.

I may ask: is this a rhino wip feature? I run this command for my rhino 7 and nothing happens.

Thank you

Hi Leonardo - it is in the WIP and 7 as well - does the command autocomplete for you?

Hi again Pascal.

I recorded what’s happening. But yea, the command autocomplete for me, but doesn’t seem to work… I cant click at the geometries. I dunno if I’m doing right to be honest.

Thank you for your patience

Hi Loenardo - SoftTransform enables/disables a state for transforms and sets options for falloff - it does no more than that by itself. To see the effect, select some mesh vertices and transform them - Move, or in your case Smooth, etc.

-Pascal

OHHH, I see it… worked now.

SoftTransform simply put is just a extra option to transformations, something like that?

Thank you for your help Pascal!

Keep in mind that once enabled, it is global for mesh and subD transforms - don’t forget to turn it off!

-Pascal

@kotto_97 something else that might help - turn on control points for the mesh - select a few and run the smooth with falloff - then use SelConnected once or twice to expand the selection, and smooth again, etc etc.

Thank you for the tips, Pascal. Really helpful!

neat trick @pascal i essentially did not know anything about it. did it slip in recently? i can not recall stumbling ever over this option.

also there is a bug with smooth mac (7.10.21231.05192, 2021-08-19) when i activate the command i can not change the view in the viewport it stays locked. i believe that worked before?
