I’ve just released GHPick, a small utility for reverse selection between the Rhino viewport and Grasshopper.
When working with larger Grasshopper definitions, I often found myself looking at a piece of preview geometry in Rhino and then searching through the canvas to find which component was generating it. GHPick reverses that workflow: pick the geometry in Rhino and go directly to the corresponding component in Grasshopper.
You can use GHPick in two ways:
• Alt+Click on Windows or Option+Click on macOS directly on visible Grasshopper preview geometry
• Run the GHPick command and click the geometry you want to find
If several components have preview geometry at the same location, GHPick shows a list of candidates. Hovering over each candidate highlights its corresponding geometry in the Rhino viewport, and selecting it takes you directly to the component on the Grasshopper canvas.
Compatibility:
• Rhino 8 — Grasshopper 1
• Rhino 9 — Grasshopper 1 and Grasshopper 2
• Windows and macOS
Installation:
Run PackageManager in Rhino, search for GHPick, and install it from there.
Dear Pedro,
I am doing something wrong (I suppose)
MacBook Pro here, GHPick installed, I can see in the Rhino Preview it is “armed”
But no matter what I do Option + Click, Command + Click etc. nothing
???
This is what I see, Nothing on the screen is clickable.
Only thing what happens, is that when I use Option (Alt) + click the message goes away.
And with control + click the message comes back on the screen.

what you see in the screen shot is after using ghpick in rhino screen
No pink objects to be seen.
you cannot see me clicking in the mov but I did 10-20 times
Components can only be selected when Preview is on (seems logical, but when also using a plugin to show components when selected (always) it was confusing)
It does not work with custom preview. When the underlaying components Preview = OFF you can see the objects in the Rhino View, but are NOT selectable.
So to find the correct component, the workflow should be to:
Thanks Eef, you found a real limitation. I’ve just reproduced it here: GHPick currently doesn’t detect geometry displayed through Custom Preview when the underlying component preview is off.
I’ll look into supporting this. Thanks for finding it!
So no Custom Preview components whatsoever can be selected? Something else is happening, and I can’t infer from the screen grab. I can take a look at your file, if you care to send me in a private message.
testfile.gh (68.4 KB)
This is part of what I am working on.
And now it functions with preview. (not in the master file).
So a job for me, to find the cause of that.
regards, Eef
i am very much interesetd in your tool, would be a big time-safer. At the moment i am working on a huge definition that has been developped over many months containing hundreds of components and clusters. unfortunately nearly all important objects are contained as preview components, so this would be crucial for me!
i downloaded eef´s testfile.gh and installed the needed plugin when prompted on opening. but i cannot select anything in the viewport using alt+click.
i originally installed your plugin by downloading the zip from food4rhino and dragging the yak-file to the rhino viewport. now when running package manager and going to the “installed” tab i cant find a possibility to update, my window looks like this:
how do i manage to install the latest version (0.6.7) as it is not at food4rhino? could you please upload the .zip or .yak here, so i can uninstall the old and install 0.6.7 freshly?
Hi brt1, thanks for reporting this. Before reinstalling anything, could you tell me the exact Rhino version you are running? You can find it under Help → About Rhino.
GHPick is built and tested against recent Rhino releases, so I would generally recommend keeping Rhino as up to date as possible. The Package Manager should normally find GHPick online, though, so I’d first like to check whether your Rhino version explains what you’re seeing.
