Probably not. From what I have seen over the last 10 or so years, it will be at exactly the same place 5 years from now… So I wouldn’t count on anything happening in that arena, since its not that interesting for most people.
In the end we didn’t rely on the font components anyways and basically built something in grasshopper where we essentially do our own kerning. I can’t share that unfortunately.
Can Rhino use .shx fonts (curve-based single-line fonts)? You cannot install .shx fonts into Windows’ Fonts folder. If Rhino can use them, where to you place or install them?
That is some sad s.
I just ran into this lack of ability to kern text today. I’m in the middle of screwing around with exploded curves and hatches, wondering how it’s come to this
Likewise; I previously used Grasshopper but my version was anything but fast. Exploded the letters into curves, added and grouped the curves one at a time back into letters (groups) in GH, then moved (kerned) each letter group. Don’t particularly want to repeat that process every time I want to kern a line of text.
i would hope that the fonts would get cleaned up in general, not only kerning but also to fix Rhino for a lot of commercial well known fonts that dont even work properly (some substyles are ignored), some on windows others on mac. it is a mess since v6.
yes kerning is something very essential for proper documentation, though for properly designed fonts manual kerning would rarely be needed, but Rhino additionally tosses the intended designed kerning completely over board making a total mess of it.
edit:
also the way fonts are now implemented is horrifying, in other software fonts from the same family get grouped for a better overview, here you just get an endless list with fonts all over the place causing my eyes to bleed. i believe that was much better in v5 still,
all that has been bothering me for so many years, not sure why i am wasting my time with this neverending bug machine that is getting less and less reliable.
Yes, we are hoping to include kerning adjustments in text. It is pretty difficult to give any sort of decent answer on when this would be done.
Edit: I think I can get some level of support for kerning in a release candidate for Rhino next month. I’ll post here when there is something available.
i am quite suprised in a good way. what about the general fonts issue? substyles that do not work for 5 years pretty exactly on many fonts. @Alain said you were working on it but that has been more than 2 years now, are there any news?
for starters super and subscripts would be cool
The latest V9 WIP now includes a checkbox on the TextObect command to “apply kerning”
hi @stevebaer the kerning in the TextObject needs a preview, its very difficult to predict how the values relate to the outcome. but since these objects can be changed any time with the command distribute the option does not make so much sense in Textobject IMO…
much rather would i love to see that happening for Text. i followed the trackers and found that this would be more work, but is there anything you could say if that could happen for v9 at least?
I do hope to add kerning as an option for annotation styles in v9. I’m focusing on several drafting related features like this in v9 and will start commenting on them in the coming weeks. Supposed to be on vacation this week so the v9 feature announcements will have to wait a couple weeks.
Kerning and line spacing are now available in the V9 WIP as annotation style settings.
