Extract render mesh duplicates materials in the 1000s

Hi,
I ran into a thorny problem using extract render mesh.
Use extract render mesh
Export selected
Open the exported file
I now find Rhino has created a separate material for each mesh giving me thousands of duplicated materials.
This is a huge problem and a file killer.
There is no way to weed through all these duplicated materials.
There is no way to find a material that’s selected when you select an object as the list is too long and never redraws.

As I was cursing McNeel I came across a command that saved me.
Rendermergeidenticalmaterials
Thanks to the person who had the foresight to add that command.

But this should not happen Rhino should not duplicate this many materials when it knows they’re shared, and it should not create materials that weren’t created by the user out of the blue.

Hi RM - try RenderMergeIdenticalMaterials

Hi Pascal,

I’m aware of that command as it says so in my post. :grinning:
My point is that Rhino should not do this, this is more like a bug or overlooked coding. I hope this gets fixed so we don’t have to run the above command. I don’t think it’s good practice to create materials that are not created by the user. Also luckily I know Rhino and came across that command but imagine others who might not know of the command will really get sore.

Ah yes well, I got to the

and made some assumptions…

@3dsynergy can you tell me how to reproduce this? Just one or two no need for the thousands…
