Add an option that automatically sets the Draw Order to the Layer Order and can be unchecked for manual editing if needed

that would be helpful as this is how it is usually done.
Yes interesting idea, would need a new entry in object attributes something like UseLayerDisplayOrder (=True/False), the layer draw order is already stored somewhere…
Do you mean in model space or in layouts?
For printing, this has been implemented.
Not that you could turn it off there, so you might mean a different thing.
I think what they want is to be able to toggle between “custom” and “by layer”. That requires that the custom display order needs to be stored even when inactive so you can toggle it back on when you want.
It is done but if you accidentally clear the draw order or change it manually, you cannot get it back as far as I know… or there is atleast no easy way to do so
