Display which layer an object is on

In R5 windows when you click on an object …at the bottom of the window it displays which layer it is on. Is there something similar I can set up for R7 Mac?

So far all I can find is clicking on the object and selecting “Object Information”. Is there a better/simpler/quicker way to identify/display an objects layer?

cheers,
Sochin

Hi Sochin -

I’m not sure what “Object Information” is.
You can keep the Properties panel open and an object’s layer information will be displayed there.
In Rhino 8, that information is also displayed on the status line.

Hi Wim,
If you control click on an object on the Mac the menu that comes up contains “Object Information” and in that it tells you which layer the object is on. I would prefer not to have to do this or leave a panel open…or tab to a panel.

In R5 Windows just by selecting an object you could readily see what layer it is on in that little line at the bottom of the app window…which I assume is the status line?

If R8 is like the above in R5 windows then sounds like problem solved for me in 8.

Sochin

Hi Sochin -

Yes, this is from Rhino 8 on macOS:

@wim …soooo much better…and I get my Osnaps back there as well.

I am really enjoying R7 Mac but at times it feels a bit “toyish” to me compared to R5 Windows which feels so much more functional. I hope I don’t offend anyone with that comment.

Will hold out until my trial runs out then buy R7 if R8 is still not out. I need to keep R5 running so as far as I understand I won’t be able to upgrade.

If R8 were out that would be perfect but now I have started the move over I may as well go. Have not upgraded since 2012 R5 release so still value for money even if I have to buy 7 and then upgrade to 8 soon after.

Hi Sochin -

Not sure what that means…

Hi Wim,
@wim my apologies for this getting off topic…I have a lot of legacy work in tSplines that if I open in R7 turn into polysurfaces…unless I go back through thousand of files and turn smoothing off on each tSpline model. Which I started doing but it got a bit much.

According to my Rhino reseller if I upgrade I can no longer use Rhino 5 and access my tSplines models. From his website:

Hi Sochin - see this page, bottom right.

I don’t know what kind of license they’re selling but this is completely wrong. Previous version Rhino license keys are always still valid after upgrading. You can continue to use the old version as well as the new version. Maybe McNeel needs to have a talk with this reseller to set them straight.

What’s true is this: “when you upgrade to a later version of Rhino, you still only have one seat. All versions of Rhino are linked together, and give you access to Rhino on one computer at a time. If you use Rhino 5 on a different computer than Rhino 6/7 at the same time, you are in violation of the license agreement.”

@pascal @Helvetosaur @wim @brian Thank you for your replies. McNeel have contacted me to get the resellers details. BTW I have dealt with him for many years now with other CAD related stuff…he is a good guy.

It seems from the info you all supplied I can upgrade R5 Windows to R7 Mac and just so long as I only use one at a time I am good to go.

My only concern would be if I had to do any reinstall of R5 as getting my tSpines or RhinoGold license to restart might be an issue. Would not think I would need to reinstall but that could be a day wrecker for tSplines. My R5 version runs in a VM on an Intel Mac…the VM I usually keep off the internet. The license is not in Zoo.

Really sorry this got way off topic. Good news in the end for me. Perhaps this post could get split.
