set object display colour to cyan, then allocate it to a red layer and its colour changes to red.
select it and it shows in selection box as cyan.
how do I get it to display as cyan when on a red layer.

It doesn’t do that here, no. You’ll have to provide more information to see what is going on.

You have complained a lot about that behavior but it’s not going to be fixed if you don’t help out!
How did you set the object color to cyan? What color was the default color of the layer the object was on before it was moved to the “red” layer?
What color are other objects on “red” layer when selected?
