Is there a way to size your detail view port automatically? I usually oversize my view ports .125" all the way around the object. It would save me a lot of time if there was a command similar to bounding box where it shrinks the view port to the boundaries of the object.
Hi John -
I’m not sure if I understand this correctly. Do you have the scale of the detail set and want that unchanged but want to change the size of the detail itself to change? If so, is that only for aesthetical reasons?

Wim, thanks for your response. Yes, when I am setting up views in layout space, I leave 1/8" all around to help organize and tidy the leaders and dimensions that I add. It’s not purely aesthetics though, sometimes I want to isolate an item in a larger context and it’s helpful to see the the ground continues on each side or that their are items contiguous to the item I’m isolating. Regardless even having a snap to function that goes to the edge of the item (instead of 1/8" all around) once the scale is set would be really helpful.
An aside but another feature that would be really helpul is custom shaped detail viewports. sometimes you want to isolate an oddly shaped item or include a blow up detail as a circular enlargement. Solidworks has circular viewports from what I understand.
Hi John -
I’m afraid my imagination is letting me down here. Could you post an example .3dm file that shows where this could be useful?
This has been implemented in Rhino 9.

This would be a great time saver. Was just thinking of the same feature today while resizing viewports. The idea is that one creates a viewport, sets the correct scaling for said viewport and the viewport automatically fits around the geometry inside the viewport with some padding, specified either in numerical value or percentage.
Hi -
I’ve put this feature request on the list as RH-88693 Detail: Scale to Fit Contents

I second that this is something I have been looking for since beginning to use rhino 10 years ago. Would love to hear an update. Thanks,
