Creating a Compression Mold from .step or .stl file

Hello all,

First post here, so sorry for any mistakes.

I have a file for a set of sunglasses that I have been trying to make a compression mold out of and have not found any success.
Is there a way to boolean out the shape of the sunglasses in a nurbs or subd object so i can get the negative shape to make the mold cavity from?
I have had some success in Fusion with their split command (splitting the sunglasses object shape from a solid). Is there a workflow in Rhino that will allow me to do this?
Attached is the file I have been trying to work with and also an example of a 3-piece compression mold that I am after from another project.
Holbrook model.STEP (2.9 MB)
MatryxBrakeLever_v2_molds v153.step (207.3 KB)
Thanks for the time!

Where is it failing?

With the parts of something like this you wouldn’t literally make a box and try to boolean it out, you have a complex parting line that you would have to…well you could base it off of edges on the model or draw it along it, then make surfaces extending out, then build out the molds from there…

(this was just done quickly to illustrate and has several problems)

One thing I notice is your model does not have draft, which means if the material you are molding is rigid it will not be able to be drawn from the mold. If the material is rubbery that may not be a problem.

There’s the new ribbon tool, but I’ve found it to be problematic with organic compound curvatures.

Draft angle analysis might help.

Indeed.
