“something better” is not great to work with, whereas, “move UVN would be much better if it did xxxx” is something we can actually work with and develop against.

Yes, it works with edit points. But not with SubD Vertex.
The _SubDFaceEdgeVertexToggle works fine in converting, also highlighting the vertices. But there is missing an extra conversion toggle mode Edit point, Control point.
So the selection becomes available for UVN manipulation (especially N - along normal). Even better would be to allow direct manipulation with Individual vertex UV or N constraint of these selections. Similar to what you can find in Mesh based modelers like Blender.
Im also wanting to move vertices, faces, edges, via something like moveUVN. If I understand responses so far correctly, the issue is these subD elements dont have UVN definable. But how does the Gumball align to object work then? Maybe an estimation? That would be good enough for me. Basically, I’d like to choose a bunch of faces and use the gumball or move UVN tool to move them same as if I chose each individually and used the Gumball with align to to object and slide normaly.
For now, I’m moving the control points as others have said. But I’m having to select all the control points manually, which is time consuming. There’s got to be some way to go from SubDFaceEdgeVertexToggle to the control points instead. Any suggestions?
Hi @samlochner ,
I’ve filed https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-86216 as a request to help here.
For now, my best suggestion is to use the Named Selections panel and save selected control points on the SubD for use with the N option in MoveUVN. That’s all that will work there currently as a SubD is not like a NURBS surface in terms of UV directions. Double click the dotted control polygon between ctrl pts on a SubD to get the whole row to make the initial selection easier. Then save the named selection of those ctrl pts for use with MoveUVN’s N direction.
Thanks Brian! Double clicking the control polygon was the bit I was missing; didn’t know it would have that effect.
I do think that, given the gumball can move a single face approximately normal, that when selecting multiple faces, the could individually be moved approximately along their normal, even though SubD is not like a Nurbs surface in terns of UV Direction. But your solution gets me what I needed, thanks.
You’re welcome @samlochner . See also https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-51143 , I’ve been lobbying for per face SubD tools for a while and hopefully this is something that can get some attention soon. FYI @pierrec
Hi @BrianJ, does it happen on purpose that if i use EditPtOn on a SubD object, select some edit points and save them as named selection that as soon as i restore that named selection, it selects the control points and not the edit points ? (it also seem to automatically turn the edit points display off and enables PointsOn).
I prefer to use edit points as they are displayed on the SubD object’s limit surface while control points are sometimes behind or inside the SubD object, which makes them hard to select.
So for circumventing that SubD vertices cannot be transformed using UVN, edit points are imho better, they are in the same position as SubD vertices and do not clutter the view with highlighted control polygon lines.
thanks,
c.
Can I ask you what kind of shapes you design?
I design bike frames and I can only use control points and control polygon, as edit points make me impossible to respect tangencies, too easy to create a wobbly surface for me…
Filed https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-86286 for the devs to check if we can make a distinction here and restore the expected edit pts. Thanks.
Hi Riccardo, actually i just encountered it while i was trying to multiedit subd vertices by moving (dragging) them along their normal. I have many similar groups of points which require to be edited synchronized so this issue came up:
