Unfortunately Alessi is not always a reference in terms of good and timeless design as they quite often produce pieces that are more “artistic” (and just for the prestige attached to whoever made it) than designed. When usability and form language is sacrificed we are no longer talking of Design, we’re talking of your art piece and personal aspirations. That needs not to be judged by a community… it’s up to your personal judgment and guts.
We then come to that usual situation where one’s questions about his/her work is just about managing his/her own fears and find relief in being accepted…
That quote was my attempt to clarify the original premise of this thread that has been continually missed. I am not looking for aesthetic feedback; I already said that it was too subjective and would be a mistake to bother. Sorry if that was not more clear. My bad. After I explained it a few times, I started using different words and got sloppy.
Here’s the first two sentences posted:
…but it also looks very familiar. Has anyone seen a similar design? I cannot find anything close, so its driving me crazy!
and later
But, I can only research so much without knowing the name of any prior projects that MIGHT be similar, especially if they were done 20 or 30 years ago.
I was looking for the ‘hive-mind’ to help me with research. That’s it. Thanks again for the feedback and consider the task complete.
Ever been in New York? It looks like an old New York subway token… Maybe that’s what triggered it.

That’s pretty cool. I don’t remember ever seeing a coin or token with a hole in it. Wait! I thought of one other example.
This is how I actually pay my office rent each month.
It is somewhat common, especially amongst the older monetary systems (many of which disappeared in the Eurozone). Norway still has some coins with holes. Basically, it’s quite handy because it allows you to put your money on a string.
I prefer giant stones, thank you. I can buy a gallon of milk AND crush my enemies.
Yup, we are moving away from digital money and back to hard, solid, fireproof cash-on-a-rope.
NFC payment is so last year.
Not in that order though.
So someone else on this thread is an old guy?
Yep… When I started riding the NYC subways as a kid, I think the tokens were still 15¢ and the various lines were still labeled BMT, IRT and IND… --Mitch
ha
i’m old enough to remember the tokens but it’s always been the MTA for me and never 15¢
wow! that’s cool
the first time i used the subway was late 80s… about 30 years after that map.
funny… they still can’t seem to get this to stick… it’s still 6th Ave : )
When I first got to NYC smoking in subway cars was banned but many people did it anyways. The windows were often left open to let the smoke out.
Times change.
We are so off topic…
It’s fun, but visually messing up a good thread on design, so I wish there were branching in this forum like in the old NG, so fun stuff like this could live in parallel with the real topic instead of hijacking it. @discourse anything that could be done do you think?
The McNeel administrators can put posts into a new thread. That functionality is not exposed to us mere mortals (nor do I think it should ).
I don’t mind at all. It’s very entertaining!
Use reply as new topic in the right gutter, or if you are a mod split the
topic using the wrench commands.
