Any idea why my computer freezes when I render a model in Rhino 7?
Um we need some sort of information. What sort of model? Rendered using what? What do mean by “freeze?” What info do we get from Rhino’s SystemInfo command?
Uploading: HOUSE 6-13-2021.3dm…
Using Rhino 7 rendering window set to draft quality.
The computer screen freezes and the computer locks up! No mouse or keyboard functions work. Blue light on the PC tower normally blinks during processing but stays solid blue. So I guess that’s what I mean by “freeze”.
I’ve tried to upload the model but I’m getting an error. The file is 171 MB.

Your video card is simply outdated for V7’s cycles GPU-based renderer. The driver is 5 years old, it’s a wonder that’s the only problem you see. See if you can update that, and/or either switch to CPU rendering on Cycles or use the CPU “legacy Rhino Renderer.”
OK… I guess we need to upgrade our PCs when we upgrade to new Rhino versions?
In the very least update the driver for your card. The W5100 is built on GCN 2nd architecture, this is the oldest architecture supported via OpenCL. If this is the first time you try rendering with 7.8 you should still get CPU rendering.

Well this isn’t exactly the heady days of the late 90s/00s where if you didn’t upgrade every 18 months you were hopelessly obsolete, but 7 years is probably due. Good luck finding anything much better right now for a reasonable price, though… People have always complained that Rhino didn’t make use of higher-end GPUs, but since V6 that’s been changing. There’s a price to pay for that however, and that’s that Rhino will no longer work fine on a potato, GPU drivers and Windows need to be absolutely up-to-date, and yeah hardware old enough to be in grade school doesn’t really cut it.
Any suggestions on a good Rhino 7 compatible graphics cards?
