Clipping planes not showing Hatches

As I battle re-learning rhino, I trying to use clipping planes. I’ve selected show hatches, but it doesn’t. How can I make this happen? The only thing I can think is the hatch is too large and doesn’t show. But this usually is paperspace problem not model space. (See image)

Also, I think I remember when using the old section tools in V7, firing up a clip initially brought up all the options like hatch, solid, etc. Is the a way to make that default in V8?

Did you set the section style for this object or the layer it’s on? I made a video for you and hope it will hopeful to you,

Hi Nicholas -

Your image shows that you are using a clipping drawings command (section tools). Those are for creating 2D geometry from 3D input. To have hatches appear when clipping 3D geometry, you need to use the section style as was mentioned.

OK. I think I got that. Now how do I get rhino to have a hatch scale that looks right in model space, and scales correctly for paperspace?

Hi Nicholas -

I always recommend to think about this the other way around. You set a scale that looks right in paper space and then set the scale to have that work in model space. But, of course, you can always use scales that are smaller than 1.

There is a dialog box on the Hatch page in the document settings. Alternatively, you can use the HatchScale command.

What am I doing wrong! I edited to show hatches. I changed section style to “custom” and assigned a hatch. I played with hatch scale assuming the scale was too big to see. Still nothing.

Hi Nicholas -

When I select an object and look at its properties, I see that the section style is by layer.

When I then check the section style for that layer, the pattern is set to “None”:

I then check the section style of the clipping plane, which is set to “Hatch 1”.
For those to show, you’ll need to change the objects’ section style to “By Clipping Plane”:

Ok that worked. Is there a way to set some clipped objects to one hatch type/scale, and others to a different one? Can I assign the hatch to a different layer?

Hi Nicholas -

That’s actually the most straightforward way of doing this, yes.
You have chosen to set the section style on a clipping plane, but I would recommend to always set it on a layer or on the object instead.
