Hi There,
This board has been helpful before so I thought I’d see if I can get some clarity on why this keeps happening to me.
I use a lot of clear plastic in my renderings, and sometimes the material will function as expected, and then sometimes suddenly it only renders as solid black. See image. It looks fine in the preview but then in the actual rendering it isn’t, it doesn’t matter how long I let it render for. Strangely I can use the material for several renderings and then all of the sudden it doesn’t show as clear anymore. Usually I can fix the situation by creating a new material from scratch using the same settings and then everything is fine. Today that isn’t working at all, any transparent material I create renders as black and I’m out of ideas what to try. Does this happen to anyone else?
Can you select the object that has the transparent material and then do File > Export Selected and save as a separate 3dm file? Please share that file here.
Additionally please post the results of the Rhino command _SystemInfo
.
Here are the requested files, thanks for helping me solve this
Untitled.txt (4.4 KB)
BLACKTUBE.3dm (830.2 KB)
Right, custom materials don’t work too well. Custom material is on my list of issues to fix. However, I’d like users to move to the Physically Based and canned materials (Plastic, Paint, Glass, Metal, Gem), since those are more in line with the capabilities of the underlaying render engine.
You can copy the color to the clipboard (right-click on color, copy color), then change the material type from Custom to Plastic. Paste the color you copied as the plastic color. Ensure transparency is set high, 95-100%.
For Rhino Render / Raytraced I would bump the value of the color to 100 and saturation down to 3 otherwise it will look quite dark blue.
