CHANGING UNITS IN RHINO in general

I am often change units between mm and feet and fraction inches ( I work in an industry when I am collaborating with carpenters and metal workers and it is easier to make changes in the measurements given - then I make a drawing of the changes and issue it to the specific department…)

I am finding the was RHINO works extremely frustrating.

I have a graphic template files - in mm - at the moment…

I can change MODEL unit any time no problem.

However, when changing LAYOUT units you need to consider a few things:

EXAMPLE 1 : keep LAYOUT units in mmm - whilst MODEL is in inches:

N01 : You have to set viewport scaling between different suits:
24.5 mm to 1" => 1:1 scale,
24.5 mm to 24" => 1/2" to 1 '-0"

I think this is the best way to change scale - if you have to change often…

EXAMPLE 2 : Change LAYOUT unit from mm to inch - when MODEL is in inches:

CHOOSING OPTION 1: - CHANGE UNIT SYSTEM ONLY - keeps everything the same proportionally, but your pages becomes a different size, so you will have scale everything down manually.

CHOOSING OPTION 2: - CHANGE UNIT SYSTEM and MAINTAIN MODEL SIZE - this will mess up your preset LAYOUT for sure, but it will be the same amount of resizing to do than the previous option, it’s just harder to see through the mess ( unit is changed from mm to inches).

in both cases, you will have to reset annotation styles and font sizes - which is the biggest pain as I have many …

Is there any better way to change unit? I guess this problem doesn’t affect many people, either way it would be good to know other people’s experiences.

Which version of Rhino are you using?

Probably an error while typing but 1 inch = 25.4 mm, not 24.5 mm.

I set the category to “Rhino”.

I would not do that. I would just use different dimension styles with the alternate units. You also don’t really need to change the file units to actually ‘work’ in different units.
