Can we improve UnrollSrf?

UnrollSrf is one of the commands which is used a lot for lasercut and any production similar to that.

but its just dumb in too many cases. it works with very simple stuff but beyond that if the geometry gets just a little more complex it becomes a pain pretty fast.

we dont have too many options here. a nervewrecking grasshopper plugin ivy needs a doctor to decipher and as such not a helpful tool for quick unrolling. other than that there is practically nothing platform independent and even if, would still prefer keeping it in rhino for multiple reasons.

UnrollSrf sometimes does a good job, or it looks like it, but at closer inspection you have to find out that there is some sneaky overlap happening. like here in this 80 faced geodesic sphere (from Rhinos Meshsphere), just the little red circle, everything else is pretty good.

in cases of simple shapes like these where its geometrically just not possible without cutting the Polysurfaces into parts or in half (one has to know that first of course) UnrollSrf stubbornly produces garbage.

if UnrollSrf could just work a bit smarter also automatically cutting the object similar to pepakura, without having to break a brain and unjoin edges manually, that would be great i guess?

Yes I agree. Unrolling a non-flat surface to a flat surface is a key function if you are a CNC router or laser operator/owner.

Pepakura is a remarkable app, it can unroll textures, and its relatively painless to use. However, I have never evaluated it on anything large to test the accuracy.
